SelectaDNA deters theft of IT equipment at top British girls school
Although the school has not been a major target for thieves it was felt that an effective deterrent was needed to make sure they continued to stay away. The independent girls' school in Somerset is protecting all its new IT equipment from theft by using forensic marking product SelectaDNA.
Jane Knights, Royal High School's Business Manager, said: “We are using SelectaDNA to protect any of our expensive IT equipment that can be readily converted into cash, including all our laptops, tablet PCs and printers.”
Royal High School is just one of many schools throughout the UK using forensic marking to deter theft. All 300 schools in the Oxfordshire area are currently being protected by SelectaDNA, as well as all schools in the London Borough of Havering.
SelectaDNA comes in a kit containing a bottle of DNA solution that can be easily applied to any item of value such as a laptop, whiteboard or audio equipment. The unique DNA code in the solution links each item to the individual school. It doesn't damage the marked property in any way.
Mrs Knights continued: “All our staff use their laptops for school work on and off the premises, and our entire sixth form has also been issued with IT equipment to help with their studies. Any of this equipment could be easily misplaced or stolen coming to and from school but SelectaDNA gives the added reassurance that if this were to happen and police recovered an item, it could be traced back to the school.”
The deterrent aspect of SelectaDNA plays a major part in any marking scheme and stickers warning thieves that an item is marked are supplied with every kit. These can be displayed on classroom windows and doors. High visibility deterrent signs can also be supplied that can be attached to school gates and exterior walls.
Mrs Knights added: “We are making sure that all the items we mark have the orange theft deterrent stickers clearly displayed on them.”
Commercial SelectaDNA kits suitable for schools can mark 100, 500 or 1,000 items.
